The Aural Tests:

Our CDs focus on the Memory Rhythm & Melody Tests:

  • Memory: Rhythm Tests: For Grades 1-5, the piano examiner plays a phrase of the aural observation piece that was played in the exam, just beforehand. The candidate listens to the phrase twice and is required to clap or tap it back to the examiner. For Grades 6-7, the piano examiner plays a piece completely separate to the aural observation tests. The examiner plays the piece three times and the candidate is required to either clap or tap the upper or lower line of the piece, back to the examiner. There is no Memory: Rhythm Tests for Grade 8.

  • Memory: Melody Tests: For Grades 1-6, the piano examiner plays a phrase three times and the candidate is required to sing the melody back. For Grades 7-8, the examiner plays a phrase three times and the candidate is required to either sing back the upper line or lower line.
